People from all cultures enjoy various forms of entertainment, and these vary in scale. The oldest forms of entertainment, such as storytelling, music, dance, and drama, were commonplace in all cultures. Various forms of performance evolved through the centuries, and these were often performed in royal courts. Later, entertainment became accessible to everyone, and the modern entertainment industry has evolved to produce records of these events. There are many forms of entertainment, from traditional shows to multimedia shows, which can be broadcast worldwide.
Another major form of entertainment, films, have been around for centuries. Many of these films aim to educate and record, and combine the two functions. The Lumiere brothers took cameras all over the world and instructed their cameramen to film anything of public interest. In the early 20th century, Pathe launched newsreels and mass entertainment became a necessity. World War I led to a growing demand for entertainment, and film was a key component of that.
Shakespeare’s comedies are also notable for their humorous nature. Shakespeare’s plays incorporate a variety of techniques, including puns and parody. These techniques include observational humor and the unexpected effect of irony. Various 20th century comedians have also utilized this form of entertainment.
